What's Up, Dock?
I enjoyed Sharon Zardetto Aker's column about using stand-alone PowerBooks on the desktop as if they were Duos ("The Pseudo Duo," August '95, page 113). I've used my PowerBook 180 as my only computer for nearly two years, both in the office and on the road. On the road, the floppy drive is indispensable. In the office, there's a significant security benefit, because my computer is never left unattended on the desk overnight. Not one of the four "essential" items you listed [monitor, keyboard, mouse, and video cable] is really essential -- I do without all of them just fine -- but you failed to mention the most essential item of all. I have an Asante Mini EN/SC SCSI-to-Ethernet adapter that enables me to access my office LAN without a hitch. If you can't get on the LAN, a color monitor and enhanced keyboard don't give you much more than a nicer game of Solitaire.
